Maggie's Story

by Cathleen & Steven Pope

Maggie at home on Mom and Dad's bed

We're delighted that we had the good fortune to have adopted Maggie Mae. She was a slight, timid, quiet 10-month-old puppy at adoption. She has become an outgoing, flirtatious, gregarious, robust dog six months later.

She is exuberantly playful -- with people and other animals -- most of whom she approaches with wiggling (Jello-like) hips and a effusive grin. She is exceedingly alert to everything around her, especially birds and squirrels which she lives to chase.

Although we haven't enrolled her in obedience training, Maggie's behavior and responsiveness improves weekly. She capably walks off the leash in a variety of locations --  her willingness to repress distraction continues to improve -- she is, after all a Border Collie who was bred to chase and herd. Maggie's animated behavior while on "squirrel patrol" is wonderful comic relief -- she bounds about like a rabbit, hopping every third or fourth stride and occasionally uttering high-pitched "yips" (or an occasional bark which one might mistaken as a baby seal.)

Maggie has become a regular back seat car rider (something which traumatized her at adoption) and wants to accompany us just about everywhere. Maggie Mae is a little sweetheart who has brought joy into our lives.

UPDATE...

Due to Maggie's dad, Steven, moving to Europe, Maggie came back into Rescue. However, she didn't stay with us long! She was quickly adopted on March 15, 2003 by Don and Kris Perkowski. Maggie went from being a city girl to a country girl.
