Chester's Story

Chester and his mom, Share

Greetings from Chester

Dear Foster Mom and Dad,

Well they finally taught me how to use the computer (ha ha). Not really, but I did want to tell you what I've been up to for the last  month or so and then my new Mom wants to say hi.

Well, let me tell you - I think I've pretty close to having seen it all and done it all - especially being a dog from rural Tennessee. My new Mom took off from work for the month of July and it worked wonders to make me feel more secure - plus we got to go a lot of places! One of our first stops was the Northern end of the Chesapeake Bay. We camped for a week, went on great hikes, went swimming in the Bay, and I even got to taste a crab cake or two (Note to Bob: I think I still prefer the Burger King burgers we used to have together.)

As a result of this trip I earned a new nickname, which my Mom and Dad think is really cute (given where we live) and I guess it's okay. Anyway, my new nickname, as a result of my Chesapeake Bay activities and all, is - you guessed it - Chester Bay!

For the next two weeks we were at my new home in Takoma Park, Maryland. Mom worked with me on some more training but she keeps on giving all the credit for my talents to your efforts when I was in foster care. My most impressive feat to date is that I am able to drop down on command from a fairly long distance and I wait there until I am told what's next. It impresses the neighbors (all with less cerebral dogs, I might add) to no end.

During this time I found a new great friend, her name is Maggie and she is a Border Collie with about as much energy as me. We take turns deciding who will herd who and we run and run down the paths in the parks. (My Mom and Maggie's clear the pedestrians out of the way!) A few weeks ago in the park, a five-year-old came up to me and started calling me "Babe's Mom" in no uncertain terms. I let it slide - hey, it's not everyday one is mistaken for a celebrity!

The last week of July we went to the Adirondacks - boy, was that great! We stayed in a beautiful resort on a lake and I was the only dog there - yeah, I love being the top dog! I was extremely well-behaved, everyone loved me down at the beach and my only incident was knocking over one beverage with my oh-so-effusive tail. I took my new parents on an 11-mile hike one day. They let me lead the way and I did a very good job of keeping our little group together.

My new Dad was very impressed with my checking-back capabilities and my trail skills. (Little did they know that after 11 miles I was just warming up). As a final feat of my outdoor skills, I went canoeing last week in an Old Town canoe (quite comfy) on a nearby reservoir. The few boaters we encountered commented on my calm demeanor (which is just pretty much the case wherever we go). In short, I am doing quite well - my new parents keep on saying on much they owe you for all your efforts to help me be the dog I was meant to be.

So in closing, I thank you for everything you did for me. Please tell the gang in Tennessee that I have found fun things to do, new playmates, and an active life here in Maryland. I miss you all and Tennessee every time the temperature goes up and we get a little humid here - but I then go down to the park across the street and just jump in the creek.

 Hugs and paws, Chester (Bay)

Greetings from Share and Eric, Chester's Mom and Dad, to Chester's Foster Mom

Dear Bev,

Can you believe that today is two months to the day since we arrived to see and get Chester?! He is doing just great - most importantly he was able to stay alone in the house (with the radio on and a good meat bone for company) for six hours yesterday with no destruction - yeah, Chester! He constantly impresses us to no end. He is such a good boy and he is working to be just the greatest dog you can imagine. We are so happy with him, for him, and about him! Endless thanks for all you did to help him and to help us have such an excellent family member.

We think of you often (how can we not when we sing your praises almost daily?) I hope all is well with you two and the gang. Who have you had in foster care since Chester? Hope you're enjoying your summer. We sure are and Chester has just been so much fun.

Best regards to you always,
Share & Eric
