Duke

Back to Adoptables

images/duke4_409.jpg

Duke is an attractive young neutered male border collie, approximately 1 year old. He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative and on preventative. He knows some basic commands, such as "settle", come, and sit. He is a typical, high energy youngster, but settles down well in the house. He has had a few accidents, but is learning house training, and is quiet in his crate at night.

He walks very well on the leash, although he is a chewer. I’ve been walking him on a sporn style harness, and it seems to work well. I haven’t tried walking him with just a collar, except for taking him out to do his business. He rides well in the car, but I would recommend some form of restraint, as he has tried to climb in the front seat on occasion.

He doesn’t seem to mind the cats at all, and is just as happy to ignore them to be with people. He gets along GREAT with other dogs. He acted timid at first, but after a little while, he started to get more comfortable. With him, I think it will be necessary to continuously socialize him with dogs and people. He is affectionate and tends to jump up, and his foster family is working on that. He also likes to paw you to get your attention.

He has not been in his foster home for more than a couple of weeks, but he seems like a GREAT dog. He should be super easy to train. The biggest thing is that he’s going to need A LOT of exercise and positive outlets for his energy. I can see him becoming destructive if left alone for extended periods without anything to do. His favorite pastime thus far seems to be chewing and destroying his toys. J I think he would be great for a very active owner, or an owner who has time to take him to the dog park daily (or has a fenced in yard). Because of his exuberance and puppy-like behavior, he would not suit a family with small children.

Duke does NOT have some of the typical "neurotic" border collie traits, but he definitely has a lot of the traits of border collies. He’s incredibly headstrong, and I think he’ll need a home with an experienced owner who will be consistent with discipline (firm, yet understanding). He also is a little bit headshy, but once he gets to know you he’s fine. He simply has "flinched" a little when people try to pet his head (but didn’t display any aggression). He’s also not at all people shy.

Please note that as a policy ETBCR does not place puppies in families with children under 6 years of age, as border collies and border collie mixes can be very reactive to the movements of small children.

Prior to or upon adoption, all dogs in our rescue program are spayed/neutered (there are NO exceptions), fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, started on heartworm prevention, treated with flea and tick preventive, microchipped, and temperament tested. We also strive to crate and house train each dog before placement.
